Year of the Tiger 2010 in Singapore: Confessions of an overseas Singaporean

geschrieben von Joey am 12.12.2011 um 11:21 Uhr
Not having been back home since February 2008, I was expecting some changes in Singapore. But I didn´t expect that I could get so alienated and disoriented. So much has changed, both for the better and also for the worse.

What I really found interesting are the number of new architecture projects - Singapore Flyer (supposedly the largest giant observation wheel in the world, outdoing the London Eye), IR (Integrated Resort, Singapore´s euphemism for a casino-based vacation resort with the first Universal Studios in asia and attempt to enthrone Macau as asia´s gambling haven), the Ion Mall with all its luxurious double-storey fashion stores from Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Prada and Co. to cater to the many rich Singaporeans now as well as tourists visiting, with tons of money to spend.

Even the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit), Singapore´s railway / metro / subway system, has evolved from its early days and now connects all corners in the city state. The number of taxis has been steadily increased to 25,000 now and more later to soon cope with the rising number of residents, expatriates and tourists. The Singapore Government ist setting the aim high at 6 million. To see the dimension of growth, I just have to think that Singapore had less than 3.2 million people when I left in June 1997.

Somehow, I didn´t really feel quite very at home this time round. Not only the physical changes, but also the change in the attitudes and mind-set of my fellow citizens and those living here as PR (permanent residents). But thank God do certain things never change.....

Like those good old friends of mine. And my family and relatvies, who still love me the same they did, no matter how they and I myself changed. Thank you to all who took time to meet up with me. It was really nice having seen all of you, some more often, the others less.

And I wasn´t disappointed with the food either. Never had been ;-) This is gonna be something that I would be looking forward to again, when visiting next year. And hopefully, I would have gotten use to the new Singapore by then.
